A clear majority of the Crop Circles have been reported in England. Yet especially during past years they have become more frequent in other countries, yet mainly in western Europe and Canada. The best database of international Crop Circles is kept by the English researcher Paul Vigay. This database can be accessed free of charge in the Internet at ."http://www.cropcircleresearch.com". Though some 10.000 formations have been recorded, the true number can be estimated to be much higher since in many countries this kind of things may be missed, ignored or miss-interpreted.

In Finland the first formations to be officially registered appeared in Espoo, near Helsinki, in the summer of 1996. In August 1998 four Crop Circles were found in southern Finland, all within a week. In 2000 a modest formation was discovered, again in Espoo.

In England there is a certain region where the Crop Circles appear especially frequently. This is located in the Wiltshire county in South England. Researchers and enthusiasts gather every summer in the heart of this area to discuss the latest formations.

It appears that very often the Circles are formed close to ancient monuments and ritual places. There are a lot of these in England, such as the famous Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles. Particularly in Wiltshire and Hampshire (another county targeted with many formations each summer) there are many such places. These constructions have been found often to be located over under-ground energy lines or at the crossing points of these lines. The lines are generally known as "ley lines". The same seems to apply to the Crop Circles as well. Therefore it is reasonable to suppose, that there is a connection from the ley lines both to the megalith monuments and the Crop Circles. The lines have been mapped using mainly dowsing rods (which can also be used to find a good spot for a well). However, today there are also technical devices to verify the existence of these energy lines.
