Pewsey, Wilthsire, England:

THE GLOWING UFO OVER THE BARGE INN

back
A glowing cloud?
A huge spotlight?
An unknown atmospheric phenomenon?
Or an etherical ship hovering below the clouds?

I was staying at the Barge Inn camping site in Honeystreet, Pewsey. It was Friday, 14 Aug, 1998 (might have been the previous day). I left the pub at 23.30 and almost instantly noticed a glow in the clouds straight above me. My first impression was that it was the glow of the Pub lights on a veil of clouds hanging very low above the site.

As I walked to the camping site behind the Inn and got out of the pub lights, the glowing shape became more clear in my eyes. It was a long elliptical shape with a small shadow or hole in the middle. It covered quite a large area and it was now obvious the lights of the pub and the surrounding houses were not the cause. The size of the thing must have been at least several hundred meters and quite honestly it made me scared.

I asked some other people still awake to take a look at the sight. They all saw it and were not able to explain what it was. A german friend of mine took a photograph with a long exposure. At the moment I don't now yet if this photo revealed something.

As we were watching the phenomenon, suddenly two or three spotlights swept the horizon very quickly. These lights came very likely from an army base nearby.

The glow didn't change its shape visibly, but during the time it was there it clearly had moved forwards though the movement was too slow to notice in real time. A little before midnight I went to a group of people that were eating, drinking and discussing around a table and asked them to take a look. As some of them got up from their chairs, the glow suddenly disappeared. I was not looking up at the moment, but a friend of mine told it just vanished in a fraction of a second.

Some 15 minutes later there was a sound of an aeroplane flying very low. The plane passed the site with a very high velocity. It had no lights on except for two wing lights blinking so that one light seemed to be jumping from one side to the other. Additionally there was a smaller orange light that seemed at first to be separated from the others but was then caught up. It appeared as if the plane was following the orange light.

Later I heard that the phenomenon repeated about a week later. It was the same place and about the same time. The glow also disapperead suddenly again.

What could be natural explanations for the glow? A white or glowing cloud is ruled out by the fact that it disappeared so quickly. A reflection of nocturnal lights from buildings is also ruled out as explained earlier. It wasn't a spotlight either, because in the misty clouds the beam should have been clearly visible, yet there was none. It could have been an electro-magnetic atmospheric effect like the nordic lights, but then it should have been very bright to be visible through the clouds. Besides, nordic lights usually tend to make faster movements and change their shape.

A more exotic explanation is an etherical space ship or some other etherical (non-physical) object. I must mention that the shape of the glow, especially the dark shadow in the middle, was better recognizable when looking a bit to the side of the object. This seems to be typical for etherical things such as auras. This kind of large glowing lights have also been witnessed in connection to the crop circles. It is my belief that the crop circles are initiated by large etherical ships which control plasma balls (or disks) laying down the crop.
